Sawchucks to Retro Sawchucks – Drew Tetz
12/14/12
“I made this trick up as a reaction to 5A tangler, which I was not a huge fan of. While players like Tyler & Sterling have made me realize that maybe tangler ain’t all bad, I’m still pretty proud of this one as an alternative. It’s very useful to learn, because it lets you transition between all kinds of elements while keeping momentum. Give it a shot.” – Drew

Turkey Wrap Combo – Steve Brown
12/10/12
“I’ve never felt comfortable enough with counterweight wraps to build anything around them…they’ve always been stand-alone tricks for me. I’m late to the party. This is my first attempt at building a decent combo using multiple wrap & tangler elements.” – Steve

Janus – Steve Brown
12/8/12
“When I first created counterweight yoyo play, I had this weird idea about all tricks being mirror images of themselves…I wanted to create an entire freestyle where it started with a trick, progressed, and then I switched to doing everything on the opposite site and repeated the freestyle in reverse until I ended at the mirror image of the first trick. I was kinda pretentious in my 20s.” – Steve

“I nicked that first bit from Drew Tetz. The rest is my insistence on creating counterweight tricks too small, fast, and subtle for anyone to give a crap about.” – Steve

“This one’s kinda tough! If you like trick history, it’s a refinement of the trick at :55 in Red vs. Drew ( youtube.com/watch?v=X0AcB4KJDdk ).” – Drew

Last Year’s Boy – Steve Brown
10/11/12
“I have so many ideas for tricks that I tend to just throw them off in bits and pieces. Personally, trick components and single moves are usually more interested to me than full, long, completed sequences. A lot of newer players are actually really dismissive of what I create because it’s not a never-ending series of point-scoring moves that they can throw, fully assembled, into their freestyle. But I’ve always been way more interested in creating components that people with the right amount of skill and imagination can see the potential in, and then take and make them their own. If you look at one of my tricks and don’t see 6 ways that you can add it to something else and make it better….then you aren’t looking at my tricks.
Anyway, this trick is a rare ‘finished product’ sequence. The initial mount comes from a piece that I nicked off Spencer Berry years ago, and adapted into a repeater that I filmed for last year’s 365. Everything that follows is me looking for the least likely way to get from point A to point B, and if you can successfully figure out how to make the yo-yo return consistently for the interruption mount at the end I’ll be impressed…most of the trick I created in 10 minutes, but it took 4 days of work for me to figure out how to make that work after accidentally doing it once.” – Steve
