Pinetree
My buddy Mike jokingly said “How come you don’t have a trick named ‘Pinetree’ yet?”
Hi, Mike. 😉
This is the opening combo from my 2007 Worlds freestyle. It’s still a damn strong opener, particularly now that it’s smoother and faster than it was in 2007. It’s also a really good way to set the tone of “Yeah, this isn’t going to score much in the way of points but it’s going to look rad”.

OH SNAP!
I love this trick. Absolutely love it.
When I first started playing yo-yo, back in 1995, the first yo-yo player I met was Dale Oliver. And Dale gave me two pieces of advice that have always stuck in my head.
1. “If you want to be a real yo-yo player, you’re going to have to get good at two-handed looping tricks.”
Ha ha ha ha…..how about I just make up my own style, get real good at that, and you can jam your 2A right up your arse? (I actually said that, exactly, to him much later and he laughed and admitted he hadn’t called that one.)
2. If you want to be a real yo-yo professional, you should learn how to snap-start a yo-yo. It looks cool, which is great, but mostly it’s going to save you a helluva lot of time when you’re teaching a class of 50+ kids how to play for the first time.”
Dale totally called this one right, and I remember the first time I did a big teaching session after I learned how to properly snap start. I’m pretty sure it cut out 3/4 of my winding time and I was able to get a LOT further in teaching the kids actual tricks and maintenance.
So the moral of this story is twofold:
1. Learn how to snap-start a yo-yo.
2. Dale Oliver is full of shit about 50% of the time.

I got to film a bit of footage with these folks, and the roughs I’ve seen are GREAT! This is going to be a stellar documentary on our little scene if they can get enough $$$ to finish the post-production. Every bit helps…thanks!
Snowpocalypse
This trick isn’t finished or polished by any means, but honestly I just couldn’t wait to share this mount. I think there’s a ton of potential here for smoother repeaters, and I just wanted to get it out there so everyone else could muck about with it. Enjoy!

Hold It (Now Hit It)
I’ve always been a fan of weird transitions, especially those where everything just comes to a dead stop. It’s mostly from hanging out with Jay Gilligan, as well as my love for Fugazi.
If you can figure out how those two things led to this trick, you’re well on your way to understanding everything there is to know about my style of yo-yo play.

Insta-Bounce – Steve Brown
There are already bounce tricks with counterweight yo-yos, but they’re usually just off a hold or an aerial. This is one you can do right off a throw, so you get into it quick. Works well with contest freestyles or stage routines where you don’t want to spend a lot of time getting into or out of anything. When you throw it over, keep your hand outwards and let the string lay over your hand…that keeps the proper distance and momentum so that you aren’t just throwing it over your shoulder and away from you.

This trick started life in my old apartment in Tallahassee, FL. It was originally meant to be a ceiling bounce…the counterweight equivalent of a “flat” throw with clubs. You throw an aerial and have both the yo-yo and the weight hit the ceiling at the same time so the whole thing drops down flat. But not being able to count on ceiling heights makes the trick kinda irritating, so I started doing it on walls instead….as originally seen in the “How To Be A Player” video from that company in Ohio.
