Hubtrap – Steve Brown

Counterweight tricks: whereby a small weight is attached to the end of the string which may be released during yo-yo play in order to create a second movement variable, opening up a vast new array of possible movements.
In 1999, I came up with the idea of counterweight yo-yo play and made up a whole slew of really neat shit. In 2007, I added it to someone else’s idea of free-spinning sidecaps on a yo-yo and made a whole slew of really neat shit that looked really easy but was actually really hard.
This is one of those.
Sadly, in order to show you counterweight tricks I have to say goodbye to a sponsor, due to a bunch of legal bullshit that’s almost as boring and irritating to talk about as it is to deal with.
Today’s trick is brought to you by No Idea Records.
Song is “Her Majesty’s Midwestern Islands” by Defiance, Ohio. They appear courtesy of No Idea Records.
Today’s trick was filmed on location at designRoom Creative. They have excellent hard-wood floors. This does not aid in yo-yo play, but it’s worth nothing because they’re ever so lovely.

J.D. Like An M.F. – Steve Brown
(Filmed at Brigade)

In 2003, Johnnie pioneered rubbing the yo-yo off your arm quickly to start it spinning. In 2003, I pioneered making this very same trick unnecessarily difficult for the sake of maintaining my street cred among jugglers. Ha.
Hi, Johnnie.

Lighten Up, Francis – Steve Brown
1/16/11
My theory on creating tricks has always been really simple. Do something wrong, and see what happens. I came up with this trick around 2000, and it’s built off the simple idea that you can’t really do a smooth Mach 5 sideways. So I started trying to do one anyway, and kept changing the mount. Finally I ended up with this weird 1 3/4 mount (as I call it, anyway) and a single rep that ends with a dropped segment and a “flip flop out”….my name for have a bound trapeze and doing that cross armed pop-out that you see at the end of the trick.

Alternating Improbabilities – Steve Brown

See, back in the day, “chopsticks” were just called “thumb mounts”. Back when I was still cool and Paul Escolar had spiky hair. Waaaaay back in the day. Hi, Neff.

I Put It In You – Steve Brown
365 Yo-Yo Tricks
1/13/11
Another trick that’s at least 10 years old. I’ve got to admit, I’m having a ton of fun digging these out and re-learning them to film. Some of these tricks, I really forgot how much fun they are. Especially the ones like this…which are almost entirely useless.

Recurring Suicide – Steve Brown
Recurring Suicide

I first made up this trick in 2001. Couldn’t hit it consistently until 2002. Forgot about it until 2007. Filmed for your viewing pleasure in 2011.
My personal best for number of repetitions is 8 reps….it’s a really pretty little repeater of a trick, just not something you want to try and hit in a freestyle.

Aesthetic Boingy – Steve Brown
Aesthetic Boingy

I created this trick this morning. It took two or three minutes to lock it in. It looks terrible when you try to add any kind of over/under component to the boingys…trust me, I already tried.
This is very much how I used to create tricks…and I’ve got to admit, it’s super exciting to have my creativity just kick back into gear like it used to. One idea, one throw, two more tries to smooth it out and done.
Feels damn good. Happy Tuesday, y’all.

Behind The Back Suicide – Steve Brown
Behind-The-Back Suicide
1/10/11
I spent a few months doing almost nothing but suicides. Seriously. This is one of my favorites from that time period…not because it’s the hardest, but because it’s the one that even non-players can dig.
Plus, it’s pretty damn hard.
