Mission accomplished.

Reversal of Fortune
7/5/11
Twiddling with hubstacks…I love being able to turn the yo-yo over and have it spinning in the opposite direction. Figured it would be worthwhile to come up with a trick that actually used that. 🙂

Happy 4th of July! Here’s a simple variation on a Nunchuck Shoulder Throw where you cross it behind your back to catch with the opposite hand. Simple, but nice.

Just didn’t have anything really new today that’s ready to show, so here’s an old favorite that I’ve always loved. 🙂

Serpentor
7/2/11
Another new trick from the “snake mount” that I made up during this project. It’s shockingly difficult to get the swing of this. Hell, it’s really hard to explain it even, since I don’t actually totally understand why it works sometimes…but not all the time. Good luck with it, though…feels really smooth when you hit it.

This is my attempt to get into the more modern counterweight stuff that I see from players like Miggy, Tyler, Jon Rob, etc. I really hope it’s not just one of their moves, but I suppose that’s entirely possible. In any event, it’s new to me and I came to it honestly. That said…it’s a sidestyle reversal that starts like a Yuuki Slack….I’m not exactly diving deep into the creative well here.

A Circle And A Triangle
6/29/11
Today, I had absolutely no ideas. I spent a couple of hours grinding through, and had nothing. Trixie came running over at some point and said “Papi, make a trick that’s a circle and a triangle.”
I stopped for a second, and remembered that kids are the smartest, and most creative little monsters on the planet. So I took a deep breath, threw the yo-yo, and immediately just did this trick.
Thanks, Trixie. Papi loves you.

Jay Gilligan Likes Russian Balls
6/28/11
I was at a juggling festival several years ago and my friend Jay Gilligan was there. He had been given a set of Russian circus juggling balls….a thin-walled, hollow plastic ball filled with a small amount of sand. Not enough to make the ball particularly heavy or solid, but just enough to keep it from rolling when they hit. It gives them a really peculiar feel to juggle, as they sort of “thud” in your hand, but with a soft whooshing sound. Super weird.
So I was hanging out with Jay and watching him work out this routine that was specific to those balls. Lots of really nifty body placement stuff, the sort of thing you would expect from Jay. Odd, off-kilter, but still graceful and interesting. After watching him for a few minutes I spoke:
“Dude, that’s a really nice routine.”
“Oh, thanks. I had these balls, and had to do something with them.”
“So you dig ’em?”
“Honestly? No. Not at all. In fact, I think I might hate them. They’re terrible. But I had to do something with them.”
Creativity is work. It’s not a bolt of inspiration that always strikes often enough to make you interesting at parties…it’s taking everything that comes your way and grinding it down to it’s essentials to see if there’s something worthwhile hiding inside. It’s checking out everything, no matter if you like it or not, because there may be something useful hiding in there. It’s often very much not fun, and most days it feels like impossible work.
But that’s what we have to do, you see. We’re compelled to be this way.
Every time I hang out with Jay, I’m reminded of this. It’s a valuable lesson to have taught to you often. Jay’s a good guy, a hard worker, and a brilliant juggler.
But he doesn’t like russian balls.

Suiciding out was the new looping out before fancy binds were the new looping out. Which means suiciding out is the old looping out, just after looping out became the old looping out?
