Kwhatjibo – Spencer Berry
3/13/13
“Kwhatjibo feels like kwyjibo but is easily repeated. I was borderline obsessed with this 1.5 to bro transition for a long time because of the many ways it can be stylized (anyone sense a theme?). This repeater is easy to do and centers around that transition.” – Spencer

Slam Dunk! – Jake Bullock
3/12/13
“Very early “tech 5A” trick. Super simple, lots of fun if you can really slam it smooth. I am fascinated by 5A tricks where the counterweight is forced through loops, knots or string segments.” – Jake

Indecisive – Jake Bullock
3/5/13
“An old 5A trick/combo I have since modified with some inspiration from Drew Tetz and Jonrob: The ending bind is something I remember Jonrob messing around with a few years ago, I think my version is different because I catch with my left (non throw) hand. It looks like I can’t decide what I want to do, so I named the combo “Indecisive”, but I really totally know exactly what I’m doing.” – Jake

Havoc – Spencer Berry
“This is another legacy trick from 2001. It debuted on my first website, Phalanx, in a video called Primus (youtube.com/watch?v=jGZogyD371Q).
It originally was going to be a collaboration trick between myself and Rob Reeves, but after the mount and that first hop, we went our own ways. It is one of the destruction tricks, alongside Cataclysm and Enigma.” – Spencer

Steve Brown Hates Tech 5A – Jake Bullock
2/26/13
“Steve Brown used to hate on “technical 5A” because he is a cranky curmudgeon and thinks 5A should be more like juggling 😉 I’m not that into juggling. But I really don’t blame him because that “style” of technical 5A got out of hand for awhile there (see my video “Tosscore”, a tech 5A classic, but a little over the top).
Tech 5A to me basically means the focus of the trick is more on counterweight movement than yo-yo movement. This can be good or bad. Traditionally, an ideal 5A trick or combo should have both the yo-yo and counterweight moving at the same time as much as possible. In this trick there is a lot of complex dice movement, but the yo-yo is mostly sitting there. In comparison to tricks of legends such as Rafael Matsunaga, Miguel Correa, and of course Steve, this is probably quite boring and not very visually entertaining; but it hadn’t been done, and someone had to do it so I did. I am proud of it and consider it worth learning, if only for the dice stalls, which I am quite proud of and know have more possibilities to explore. The ending “dismount” where the counterweight pulls the slack into the yo-yo is now a fairly classic 5A move that I have seen several variations of, I am not sure if it’s entirely original.” – Jake

YuukYuuk – Spencer Berry
2/20/13
“I’ve done the 1.5 pop to effortless whip component of this trick for many years. Usually when I show it to a yoyo player, they know it as a Yuuki Spencer trick. It looks slightly puzzling if performed with minimal hand movement.
So I added a gunslinger type move and repeated it. And as per most of my basic hold repeaters – there is a lot of room to tweak it out in your own manner (pinwheel one spot, pop in another, alternate sides, whatever kind of hand movements you want to center it around). This is a feel good trick and not as difficult as some of the variations I’ll be practicing for later in the year.” – Spencer

Handcuffs – Jake Bullock
2/19/13
“First did a variation of this trick in a 5A video battle against Drew Tetz entitled Drake Bulletz. Drew won the battle, but that’s because his 5A is on another level. Just double wrist wraps with the counterweight and yo-yo. Very difficult to hit clean and uncomfortable to perform. Handcuffs are also uncomfortable to wear, thus the name.” – Jake

Rogue – Spencer Berry
2/13/13
“Rogue was a quick fire sequel that came right after Wonder Woman in 2001. It has a similar style and pace.
The most notable component is probably the Magic Drop to Spirit Bomb move, which I was quite proud to discover. When I took this trick to the Spindox club, Paul Escolar showed me Yellow Airplanes, which was brand new at the time. Yellow Airplanes has the same Magic Drop in it.
This coincidence stifled my desire to record this trick and I moved onto to other tricks. Somehow, I have remember this trick for all those years, and now it shall see the light of day.” – Spencer

Hellavators – Jake Bullock
2/12/13
“Invented in 2007 when all the yo-yo kids were obsessed with BAPE and hyphy music. Everyone was dressed like a goon in pastel camo and saying “hella” in every sentence. Anyways, it looks like the counterweight is an elevator, thus “hellavators”. Also a play off one of my favorite songs, “Televators” by The Mars Volta.” – Jake
